What's with 'proactive living'?

If you've had a looked at the NEAMEDICA home page, you may have seen me mention 'Proactive Living'.  I just wanted to write a little about this to explain exactly what it is and why it's so important.

When you hear the term 'Proactive Living' what springs to mind?  There really is no right or wrong answer but what we mean by it is choosing to live in a way which is both good for you and feels good.  You'll know it's good for you if you feel good doing it.  Over time, you'll feel good every day and it will just become a way of life for you.  It's about making decisions on a day to day basis which contribute to your overall health and well being, even if they may be the harder choices.  Be proactive - not reactive and certainly not passive.

Here's a simple example, you finish work at 6 pm, it's cold and raining.  You have your gym kit with you but you really don't want to go to the gym.  However, you do it anyway because you know it's an essential part of looking after yourself, now and in the future.  And you do it with a positive outlook and a positive attitude.  You may be tired and hungry afterwards but boy do you feel good!  And feeling good really is important.  Your body and mind will tell you what they need, you just need to listen to them.  Learning to listen to yourself so you can live a proactive life is not as hard as you may think it is.  It's about being in tune to your needs and this is something you really can learn.  It often also involves challenging and pushing yourself and with this comes pride which is an essential component of self value.

On the other hand, suppose you finish work at 6 pm, you have a terrible cold and feel really washed out and drained.  But you're doing really well with the gym and have targets to reach so you really don't want to miss a day.  Deep down you know what you really need is a good nights sleep.  You make the decision to forego the gym today and go to bed early after a nutritious meal.  This is also 'Proactive Living' - understanding your body and its needs, prioritizing it and taking care of it.

It really is all about valuing yourself enough to learn to really listen to yourself, doing those things which will keep you well,  and incorporating this skill into your daily life so it just becomes a very natural part of living.  And of course, doing them with a smile - attitude matters too!  Living proactively, taking positive actions for our well being, really is a very powerful empowering tool in keeping us healthy for as long as possible.
